Dear Senator, I am asking you to oppose Senate File 553. This legislation puts unnecessary restrictions on protecting and enhancing Iowa’s public parks, trails, water quality efforts, and wildlife areas. Public recreation opportunities are vital for quality of life, public health, and economic development in both rural and urban areas of our state. Iowa ranks among the last states in the country in its percentage of public lands, and the Iowa DNR owns less than 1% of land in the state. While SF 553 might seem narrow in scope, it is part of a larger attempt to restrict opportunities to enhance Iowa’s outdoor recreation opportunities — removing the ability of the Iowa DNR to purchase land at auction, regardless of the public need or benefit. It also creates barriers for the Iowa DNR to receive land that was purchased at auction by nonprofit groups. This is not what Iowans want. With Iowa's increasing cancer and obesity rates, outdoor recreation is more important than ever and access to public land should be encouraged, not hindered. Please respect the voices of Iowans and vote against SF 553. Thank you for your time,
