Iowa’s communities and drinking water are at ongoing risk from toxic pollution caused by coal ash, a byproduct of burning coal for electricity. As MidAmerican Energy and Alliant Energy continue to generate coal ash at their Iowa plants, their discharge of wastewater containing coal ash leachate threatens public health and drinking water in nearby and downstream communities. Coal ash contains heavy metals including arsenic, mercury, lead, and cadmium, toxins that can cause serious health impacts, including cancers, even at low exposure levels.

Subject: Protect Iowa’s water from toxic coal ash pollution

Message:

Dear Representative, Please support House File 2237 to protect Iowa’s communities and drinking water from the ongoing risk of toxic pollution caused by coal ash. MidAmerican Energy and Alliant Energy continue to generate toxic coal ash at their Iowa plants and discharge wastewater that threatens drinking water supplies in nearby and downstream communities. Coal ash contains heavy metals including arsenic, mercury, lead, and cadmium, toxins that can cause serious health issues even at low exposure levels. Allowing utilities to discharge known cancer-causing chemicals puts our health and water at risk. These pollutants are avoidable with available, proven treatment technologies; yet several Iowa facilities still discharge regardless. HF 2237 would prohibit coal plant operators and ash landfills from discharging toxic pollutants into water sources no later than December 31, 2029. Our rivers and groundwater sustain millions of residents, thousands of farms, and local economies. Safe drinking water and pollution-free rivers for recreation are key to building thriving communities. I ask you to support this practical and needed step to protect Iowa’s health.
