A Month of Energy Successes for Iowa!

The past month has been a truly exciting one for folks focused on the clean energy movement in Iowa, and we are excited to share some highlights with you.

The month began with a protest rally at the Berkshire Hathaway shareholders conference in Omaha. IEC and its partners in the Clean Up MidAm coalition brought together scores of activists from Iowa, Nebraska, and around the country to demand that the parent company of MidAmerican Energy immediately transition away from fossil fuels. You can view highlights from the rally here.

This was followed by a landmark report published by IEC in partnership with the American Lung Association, Physicians for Social Responsibility, and the Winnebago Tribe Comprehensive Healthcare System. Released on World Asthma Day, Coal in Siouxland examines the unsettling relationship between coal plant pollution and lung disease in Woodbury County, site of Iowa's two oldest coal-fired power stations. Watch the press release event on Youtube.

After submitting comments opposing Alliant Energy's discharge of toxic coal ash waste into the Des Moines River upstream from the city of Ottumwa, we learned that Alliant has agreed to stop the discharge! Read more about this on our blog.

And finally, we submitted comments to the Iowa Utilities Board with our partners at the Environmental Law & Policy Center supporting the Board's proposal to repeal its Renewable Energy Verification rules. These rules, while perhaps well-intentioned, were having the effect of enabling the utility monopolies like MidAmerican Energy to mislead the public. Read all about this in our newsroom.

Report: Solar development has minimal impact on ag land use

As renewable energy grows in rural areas, people have wondered whether solar projects will limit the available agricultural land.

A new report from the Center for Rural Affairs found their overall impact on agricultural land use is minimal. The DOE predicts that between 210 and 420 GWs of solar projects are needed in the Midwest by 2050 to meet federal decarbonization standards. According to the report, if all of the forecasted solar was built on the region’s prime farmland, it would occupy between 1.45% and 2.9%.

One-third of Grinnell College power to come from solar energy with new solar array

Grinnell College has made a “decisive step” forward in the direction of operating without emissions with the completion of a 9,000-panel solar array.

One-third of Grinnell College’s campus is now running on renewable energy with the array, the largest private solar installation in the state, Grinnell College President Anne Harris said. As Grinnell College reaches this milestone in its goal of hitting net-zero emissions by 2040, a community-wide solar project could have more than half of the university’s power come from renewable sources.

Linn Co. to update regulations for wind energy projects

There are currently no big wind energy developments on the horizon in Linn County. It is because there are no projects in the works that county leaders say it’s a good time to update the ordinance. This was a lesson learned from when these same officials went through the process for solar.

The updated ordinance regulates how close wind turbines can be to other properties, how much noise they can make, wildlife and agricultural impact, even how their flickering shadows impact neighbors.

IEC submitted comments on these proposed changes to the Linn Co. Board of Supervisors. First consideration will be June 3. Read more from KCRG

Clean Up MidAm held a rally at the annual shareholder conference for Berkshire Hathaway (owner of MidAmerican Energy), bringing together scores of passionate citizens demanding an immediate transition away from fossil fuels. The rally featured powerful testimony from members of the Winnebago tribe, whose nation faces disproportionate incidences of lung and heart diseases and cancer as a result of their proximity to MidAm's coal plants.
