Iowans are facing one of the highest cancer rates in the country, and we are one of the only states where cancer rates are increasing.

This crisis affects every community, every family, and every demographic in our state: children, grandparents, rural, urban. But one thing has always defined Iowa: when challenges arise, we don't wait for someone else to solve them. We come together and take action. The science is clear that toxins and pollutants in our environment, including our waterways, are contributing to this crisis. We cannot afford to ignore the clear scientific evidence that environmental pollution, including contamination in our water, is contributing to this urgent health crisis.

Iowa families need access to clean, safe water. Yet more than 700 Iowa waterways do not meet standards for uses like drinking water, swimming, and fishing. We are asking lawmakers to:

Set targets and deadlines for reducing pollution upstream, before it reaches our rivers and streams
Require a set of conservation practices that keep soil, pesticides, and fertilizers on the land instead of in our waterways
Strengthen oversight and accountability for industrial agricultural operations, including Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs)
Invest in the monitoring, modeling, and planning that will allow for a statewide approach to investing in conservation where it will have the biggest impact.
