The EPA is proposing to approve the Iowa Department of Natural Resources’ (IDNR) State Implementation Plan to control haze pollution caused by coal-burning power plants. Unfortunately, Iowa’s plan ignores cost-effective upgrades to pollution controls at MidAmerican’s Louisa, Walter Scott, and Neal North and South coal plants that would significantly reduce harmful air pollutants.

And the EPA wants to give Iowa’s plan the greenlight? That is unacceptable.

Unless the EPA creates a Federal Implementation Plan (FIP) for Iowa, taking meaningful action to control haze pollution, people across the region will continue to suffer unnecessarily, and our treasured parks will be debased by visibility issues. Regrettably, IDNR is not doing enough to protect our parks or human health, so now it is up to the EPA to finish the job.

Send a comment to the EPA urging them to act now by disapproving of Iowa’s plan and creating a FIP – requiring MidAm to upgrade its pollution controls and clean up our air!

I am concerned that Iowa is not taking adequate steps to control air pollution from the Louisa, Walter Scott Jr. 3 & 4, Neal North and Neal South coal plants. Under the Regional Haze rules, Iowa DNR must require cost-effective controls at these plants for both SO2 and NOx. Haze pollution can travel hundreds of miles from its source, affecting already overburdened communities along the way. By implementing cost-effective upgrades to the controls at these plants, MidAmerican would reduce harmful air pollutants that worsen respiratory illnesses such as asthma and chronic bronchitis, while also degrading air quality and visibility. I also care about the impacts of these major sources of air pollution on national treasures like the Boundary Waters Area Wilderness, Isle Royale National Park, Badlands National Park, and Mammoth Cave National Park. I am deeply concerned about the impacts of these coal plants on the health of my family, my community, and our region's natural places. You have the power to protect our beautiful parks and wilderness areas, save lives, and improve the quality of life for vulnerable Iowans and communities across the Midwest. Please reject Iowa DNR’s SIP and promptly issue a strong Federal Implementation Plan that will curb haze-causing pollution at its source: coal-burning power plants like MidAmerican’s Louisa, Walter Scott, and Neal North and South. Thank you for your work protecting our national parks, wilderness areas, and Iowans.
