While state and national governments stall on climate action, cities are stepping up.
Des Moines could soon join a growing number of major U.S. cities in adopting an ordinance that will cut energy waste from buildings.
Des Moines has committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions 28% citywide by year 2025. We cannot get there without concrete actions. If passed, this policy would play a big role in reaching that goal.
Under the Building Performance Policy being considered by the Council, Des Moines’s largest buildings would track – or ‘benchmark’ – and annually report data about their energy and water consumption.
Knowledge is the first step to any energy management strategy. This ordinance is the least we can do as a city to move toward our greenhouse gas reduction goals and provide an example for other mid-sized cities with big aspirations for the future and big concerns for the planet.
Act Now: Ask city leaders to pass a building performance policy.

Take action! Ask city leaders to pass a bulding performance policy.
Under the Building Performance Policy being considered by the Council, Des Moines’s largest buildings would track – or ‘benchmark’ – and annually report data about their energy and water consumption. The proposed policy would impact less than 1% of Des Moines buildings while capturing 43% of all energy use from buildings.
