Subject: Iowa's solar energy investment credit

Message:

I am writing as a constituent to ask you to support strengthening Iowa’s solar credit. A bill to do so, HF 221, has already passed unanimously out of a House Ways & Means Subcommittee. The solar investment tax credit has been a popular and successful program that needs to be updated to continue driving investments by businesses, farmers, and homeowners. This program has assisted Iowans in all 99 counties by encouraging customer-owned solar development. The credit has been responsible for leveraging about $7 for every $1 of state investment. Iowans invest in solar to reduce energy costs and these projects strengthen local economies when energy savings can be put back into an operation or be used to increase wages and hiring. As more Iowans have made the decision to go solar in recent years, applicants for the upfront credit face a mounting waitlist which has discouraged investment and slowed growth. To improve this program, HF 221 would pay down the current waitlist, raise the annual cap for the program, and de-couple the state credit from the ever-changing federal solar credit. The updates to this popular program will increase the numbers of Iowans able to save with solar and provide certainty for the solar industry. This increased certainty means solar companies can hire more people and expand their businesses. More than 85 Iowa businesses are part of the solar supply chain found across the state, supporting careers in installation, manufacturing and engineering. The state added nearly 550 solar jobs between 2015 and 2019 and there is potential for even more expansion in the years ahead. Please support HF 221 or related legislation to encourage growth, support local jobs, and continue Iowa’s clean energy leadership this session. Thank you,
